Clear bra / PPF Q&A
Here are some questions we see a lot, and our best responses to them.
Do modern cars need paint protection?
Yes, modern cars need paint protection film as much as any other car. Vehicle Paint still chips, and the rugged Polyurethane of Paint protection film is designed to withstand small rocks and road debris.
Is clear bra protection worth it?
When considering whether clear bra is worth the money, it's important to consider the Kelley Blue Book value of your vehicle and the condition of its paint. If we assume for a moment that the clear bra will cost $800 (a fairly average cost for Paint protection film), and you drive an $80,000 car, then the marginal cost of 1% of your car's worth will definitely pay off in the long term in the resale value of your car.
On the other hand, if you drive a $700 car, paying the value of your Vehicle to protect your Vehicle doesn't make any sense at all. In between these examples, you have to factor in how long you plan to keep the Vehicle, how many freeway miles you log (more paint chips happen at high speeds, which happen on a freeway), and how good or bad the paint currently is (more worthwhile to protect pristine paint than already-chipped paint).
Can I polish PPF?
There are many different brands of PPF that behave differently. Some would respond better than others to buffing. Additionally, there are different types of buffing, so a light buffing may be fine on many clear bras while a heavy polishing would not. So, when thinking about buffing a clear bra, you should definitely follow manufacturer recommendations. If you're going to try buffing your clear bra, try starting on an unobtrusive area to see how the clear bra responds!
Can you wax over paint protection film
Probably, but make sure to follow manufacturer recommendations for the particular brand of Paint protection film on your vehicle, and match the wax to their instructions. For example, we at Ceramic Wizards Paint Protection install Xpel PPF, and the Xpel website has the following to say about waxing their PPF films:
"While you can wax the film, be sure the product you are using doesn’t contain Naphtha or Kerosene in concentrations over 5%, and avoid waxes that contain dyes. For best results, we recommend using our XPEL Flawless Finish Paint Protection Film Sealant or XPEL Ceramic Boost. This product has been specially formulated for use with polyurethane paint protection films to provide the maximum protection and gloss, while containing no ingredients that would cause discoloration over time."
Can paint protection film be removed
Xpel clear bra film is designed to come off without damage to your car's paint. If it was properly applied by a certified Xpel installer such as Ceramic Wizards, clear bra should come off easily enough. Now, why you'd ever want to remove your car's protective film is another story for another day!
Which is better paint protection film or ceramic coating
Paint protection film (PPF) and Ceramic coating are two totally different product classes. While each offers a type of automotive paint protection, they do so in very different ways. To get ultimate protection, you should have both. However, if you're considering one or the other, it helps to know what each does and does not do.
Ceramic coating is an ultrahard clear coat that adds an additional protective layer over your car's paint job. It excels at keeping corrosives away from your paint. Ceramic coating has hydrophobic properties like wax does, but unlike wax, it is made of one of the hardest substances known to science. It provides amazing protection against bug splatters, bird droppings, tree sap, hard water deposits, and other acidic or corrosive elements.
PPF, also known as clear bra, does one thing and does it well: protects against impact-related damage. While it's not going to stop a major impact from hurting your car, it will protect against all the minor stuff, which is 95% of what wears down your paint. Road debris rock chips. Scuffs. Scrapes. Minor scratches. That sort of thing.
So, which is better? They both are. If you're logging a lot of freeway miles, clear bra is a must-have to protect your front end from getting chewed up. If you want overall corrosion protection over your entire vehicle, Ceramic is the way to go. If you can afford it, by all means go for both!
How long does paint protection film last
Paint protection film can last a decade or more, but that really depends on a lot of factors, like what brand of PPF, whether the car is washed and cared for frequently, whether the car is stored indoors and outdoors, how much sun the car gets, and many other factors. Here at Ceramic Wizards Paint Protection, we use Xpel clear bra products, in part because of the awesome Xpel 10 year warranty, but also because their stuff is just amazing overall.
Is it worth getting paint protection on a new car
A hundred times yes, paint protection on a new car is so worth it. Whether you're opting for Ceramic coating, clear bra, or both, you have a chance to protect your pristine paint from bird droppings, road debris, bug splatter, and other enemies of your factory finish. Brand new is the best time to get paint protection!
How much does it cost to get paint protection film
Paint protection film cost varies widely by installer, region, brand of PPF used, model of vehicle, and what "package" (different amounts of surface coverage of different vehicle components) you're opting for. To get an exact PPF installation quote, contact Ceramic Wizards Paint Protection and we'll get you sorted!
What is the best paint protection film
There are many good Paint protection film products on the market, and we don't know that there is a single "best PPF." That said, we're big on Xpel self healing paint protection film and we believe it to be one of the best, if not the best, clear bra brand for automotive applications. Which is why we offer Xpel clear bra (Xpel Ultimate, Ultimate Plus, Stealth, and the rest of the Xpel lineup) to our customers.

Does paint protection film really work
Yes, Paint protection film works amazingly well at stopping most of the common rock chips and other small damage to your factory paint. More than 90% of what wears down a car's paint job are the small nicks and dings, not the big events. And those small nicks and dings are exactly what PPF is designed to defend against.
Does removing clear bra damage paint
No, removing a clear bra does not damage the factory paint of your vehicle, so long as the clear bra is of a high quality. Clear bra films from Xpel, 3M, Avery Dennison, Ceramic Pro, and other respected manufacturers are designed to come off cleanly.
Just be sure to follow manufacturer instructions for Paint protection film removal, which can be found on the website of the respective clear bra manufacturer. As a general rule, it's always best to have a trained professional perform PPF removal, just as it's better to have them do PPF installation.
How long does it take to install a clear bra
Obviously, it takes different lengths of time for different clear bra installers depending on their experience. It's extremely important to make sure the PPF film lays correctly and has no air bubbles. Here at Ceramic Wizards Paint Protection, our PPF installs take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours depending on the vehicle and the amount of coverage we're going for.
Can you wash your car with a bra on it
Yes, you can wash your car with a clear bra on it. Just follow manufacturer recommendations, easily available on the website of 3M, Avery Dennison, Xpel, Ceramic Pro, or other Paint protection film manufacturers. Xpel, for example (the PPF brand used here at Ceramic Wizards Paint Protection), recommends allowing the film to cure for 48 hours.
After that curing period, it can be cleaned with a pressure washer, though they do say not to aim the pressure washer directly at the film edge.
Does clear bra hide scratches
A clear bra is a completely transparent clear coat Polyurethane film and nearly invisible to the naked eye, so whatever's below it will show right through. That includes scratches. So no, Paint protection film will not hide scratches, nicks, dings, stone chips, or other paint blemishes.
How much does Xpel clear bra cost
Xpel clear bra installation is not cheap by any means, but it is worth its weight in gold for its preservation of your car's value. There's a pretty wide range of clear bra costs, depending on: your vehicle; the "package" you opt for (there are different levels of coverage), and other factors. If you'd like an exact quote, then contact Ceramic Wizards Paint Protection and we'll get you one!
Can you clay bar Xpel?
Xpel says that its Paint protection film can indeed be detailed with clay bar, the same as one could do to automotive Paint. If anything, in our experience, Xpel clear bra responds even better to clay bar Auto detailing than Paint does!
